Experience and Qualifications

Gene

With over 21 years experience in law enforcement, 4 years as a county commissioner, and 8 years as co-owner of a construction company, Gene feels he is well qualified in all aspects of the operation of the sheriff's department.

His experience with the Cumberland County Sheriff's department, Crossville Police Department, and the Atlantic Beach, Florida Police Department, has given Gene the necessary abilities to work with the public, fellow officers, and supervision experience of law enforcement personnel.

Experience of this nature is critical in the day to day supervision of the sheriff's department and its personnel. Knowledge of the law and the operation of the judicial system are imperative in the detection, prevention, and prosecution of crime.

Gene began his career in law enforcement in 1974 under Sheriff Dale Elmore as a radio dispatcher and was promoted to Deputy Sheriff a month later. Since 1974 Gene has served Cumberland County and the city of Crossville as a Deputy Sheriff, Patrol Sergeant, Staff Sergeant, School Resource Officer,

  • Patrolman, Criminal Investigator and Detective. He is presently a detective with the Crossville Police Department.
  • Serving 4 years as a county commissioner has given Gene the knowledge and ability to work hand in hand with the legislative branch of county government to provide our county with the best and most professional sheriff's department possible.
  • Being a co-owner of a successful construction company gives Gene invaluable experience in planning, supervision, estimating and budget preparation.

All of these qualities will be put to use in the effective operation of the sheriff's department.

Gene and his wife of 36 years, Jackie, live in the Homesteads community, and are members of Oaklawn Baptist Church.

They have two sons and four grandchildren and have served as foster parents to 47 children.

Gene's most memorable award ceremony was when wife Jackie received the "Mother of the Year" award while they were house parents for 13 teenage status offenders in the Cumberland County Group Home.

 

Education and Awards

Gene attended Roane State Community College, North Florida Junior College and Walter State Community College receiving credit hours in the field of Criminal Justice. Courses including: Police Administration and Organization, Police Science, American History, Psychology, Juvenile Delinquency, Criminal Justice, Criminal Procedure, Court Procedure, Criminal Investigation, Criminal Law, Pathology Maturity. He has received specialized training in many other law enforcement subjects. Gene is a certified Police Officer in the state of Tennessee, Certified police firearms instructor, R.A.D. instructor, school resource officer, former D.A.R.E. officer, and holds a Tennessee teacher's license to teach Criminal Justice in Tennessee high schools.

During his law enforcement career Gene has been recognized with the following special awards: Crossville Jaycees Outstanding Young Law Enforcement Officer, F.O.P. Officer of the Year, Veterans of Foreign Wars-Atlantic Beach, Florida Officer of the Year, Team Spirit award D.A.R.E Officer Training, S.A.V.E. School Safety Award, Community Service Award, Certificate of Appreciation Crossville Kiwanis, and eight Officer of the Month Awards and Certificates of Recognition.

A NEW Sheriff with NEW plans to make Cumberland County a SAFER place to live and raise our children.

Gene's goals for his administration will be to focus on the efforts of all personnel and resources of the sheriff's department to the detection, prevention, and prosecution of criminal activity.
